What is Virtualization?
By Jamie Epstein, TMCnet Web Editor
Businesses around the world continue to implement enterprise virtualization projects to in order to significantly cut costs associated with various technology operations, while generating financial benefits. The cloud serves as the ‘home’ in the virtualization landscape.
Virtualization is defined as creating something virtually, instead of having an actual physical version. This virtual version could be many different things including a hardware platform, operating system, storage device and network resources.
Currently a huge trend in the IT industry, virtualization includes autonomic computing which essentially means the IT environment can manage itself based on what it thinks the activity will be in the future. Utility computing is a service whereby computer processing power is viewed as an add-on that clients can pay for only if they need it.
Virtualization solutions can include Infrastructure Consolidation, Desktop Virtualization, Data Center Management and Automation and Virtualization Accelerated Deployment solutions that have been developed specifically for mid-sized businesses and enterprises.
Infrastructure Consolidation is when virtualization allows for servers, storage, power and cooling elements to work in conjunction with each other.
Desktop Virtualization is designed for both small and large businesses. Smaller companies can now utilize remote access, while bigger enterprises can drive down the cost of the next hardware refresh cycle. It also solves many administration issues, and makes it easier to deploy programs such as Windows 7.
Data Center Management and Automation describes how the virtual environment requires minimal day-to-day administration, and even less maintenance. Tasks are easily automated, and Carousel can help with this by offering monitoring solutions or by providing help to companies that would like to have the tools in place to monitor their own systems, in order to learn how to monitor their systems to get the data points needed.
Accelerated Deployments are perfect for organizations just starting the transition to virtualization. Carousel’s teams use staging and best practices to reduce risk and limit downtime during the transition from a physical to a virtual environment.
Developing an enterprise virtualization strategy is crucial to in order to see multiple benefits as virtualization can bring extreme flexibility and agility to any business.
