TMCnet Virtualization Week in Review
By Jamie Epstein, TMCnet Web Editor
If your organization isn’t already utilizing a virtualization solution, now is the time. Virtualization can help to streamline operations, while simultaneously reducing costs and increasing productivity.
This week, Carousel Industries, a major player in the industry, penned a blog post that discussed some of the biggest companies that were recently hacked.
One of these unlucky victims includes Zappos – an online shoe warehouse that is owned by Amazon – which suffered the adverse affects from its system being penetrated as it was forced to inform over 24 million of its customers that an attacker had infiltrated its servers and gained access to confidential information such as customer’s names, email addresses, billing information, phones numbers and the last four digits of their credit cards.
Acting without haste, the company decided to automatically reset all users’ passwords, forcing them to create new, unique password on their next visit. Zappos also strongly advised customers to cease using that aforementioned password in all other instances.
In other news, startup company Nicira recently revealed that it will be providing an innovative virtualization solution via its new software. Although networking can sometimes be complex in virtualized environments, Nicira’s products will allow users to manage this solution in a much simpler manner.
"AT&T (News
- Alert), working with Nicira, is delivering enterprise-grade, secure and scalable network virtualization within its internal OpenStack deployment,” Toby Ford, AVP of Cloud Architecture and Strategy said in a statement. “Nicira's technologies support our work to open the network for innovation and unlock numerous, differentiated offers such as the AT&T API Delivery Platform, the AT&T Developer Center ForHealth, and other services we'll be building for developers and businesses."
Closing out the week, networking appliance company F5 Networks (News
- Alert) has raised the level of support it offers for many virtualization solutions including Citrix XenDesktop, VMware View, Microsoft (News
- Alert) Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and others.
Known for assisting organizations in building virtualization-ready infrastructure, customers can easily drive network traffic, improve performance and centralize access and security policies with F5.
“BIG-IP products are unique in that they integrate authentication, directory services, SSL offloading, and other services throughout the desktop infrastructure so organizations can optimize virtual desktop delivery with fewer resources, while also supporting network and application access control for non-VDI enabled applications. Unlike the current alternatives, BIG-IP gives organizations the flexibility to implement a VDI solution that best meets their needs today, as well as tomorrow, while keeping infrastructure costs down,” Erik Giesa, senior vice president of Product Management and Product Marketing at F5 Networks stated.
