TMCnet's Virtualization Week in Review

By Jamie Epstein, TMCnet Web Editor

Virtualization is an extremely hot term used right now that everyone in the technology world is buzzing about. Due to the fact that virtualization enables organizations to see many benefits including reduced costs, streamlined operations and increased productivity more companies on a daily basis are beginning to implement this innovative solution.

This week was no different as it kicked off with the news that Quest, a technology management and consulting firm, inked a partnership agreement with Desktone, Inc., a provider of Desktops as a Service (DaaS). In line with the agreement, Desktone will provide DaaS platform and NetApp’s storage systems to allow Quest to power cloud-hosted virtual desktops.

Additionally, the partnership allows Quest to gain access to multiple virtual desktop features and server capabilities in a highly scalable cloud environment, which drives security, support, availability and performance on several end user devices.

“With the rise in workforce mobility, we’re seeing demand from our customers for technology solutions that support all types of devices, from smartphones and tablets to MacBooks and PCs,” Tim Burke, CEO of Quest, said in a statement. “We evaluated traditional virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) vendors but realized they are missing many of the features required by service providers. With Desktone’s DaaS expertise and NetApp’s extensive storage technologies we’re able to quickly provide our customers with flexible, secure virtual desktops whenever and wherever they are needed.”

In related news, virtualization provider Carousel Industries recently assisted The Boston Red Sox baseball team in revamping its unified communications system to meet increasing demands.

As the team needed to quickly replace its Centrex/Hybrid phone system, Carousel offered the design and support needed to implement a wide array of UC solutions including virtualization, VoIP, visual communications, collaboration and data infrastructure.

Through helping the sports team first establish what it hoped to gain from the new technology solution, Carousel was able to seamlessly integrate a ticketing contact center system with the rest of the organization, and also make the ticketing system allow equal access to tickets for all. Busy signals when fans called in were also eliminated.

Closing out the week, VirtualSharp Software launched a V#P Partner program with cooperation from 30 partners who are located in over 14 different locations to better manage the growing demand for its flagship product, ReliableDR. This innovative product boasts the ability to completely automate the process of failover testing, while simultaneously making sure that it measures up to rigorous standards set by business continuity policies.

In a release, Carlos Escapa, CEO of VirtualSharp Software said, “We are thrilled to see the customer and market traction for our Disaster Recovery solutions. In 2011, we saw projects move from early proof of concepts to large scale deployments, and partners are critical in making them a success which is why we’re excited to officially launch our V#P Partner program.”
